Karsten Hansen

Professional Architect & Director

As a registered professional architect, Karsten has enriched his work experience by engagement in various countries and offices around the globe. After graduating Cum-Laude from the University of Pretoria in 2007, he lived and worked in Germany, whilst travelling through Europe and Africa.
The first introductions to the work environment in Germany ranged from micro to macro scale. This included a train station in Wuppertal and the EkoZ centre in Kerpen which facilitated the latest in energy-saving construction methods.
Upon returning to South Africa in 2012, Karsten managed the Mkhondo branch of TJ Architects, with the dynamic advantages of interfacing with several offices around the country. Herewith came possibilities to broaden his horizons by completing work in both the public and private sector. Skills have deepened from work on elaborate private homes and residential estates to company headquarters, commercial and industrial ventures, clinics, and hospitals have served to round out his knowledge in diverse areas.
When the opportunity came to translate his knowledge and background into a specific brand of service, Karsten teamed up with Anso to establish Khanya Architects in 2017. Since then, he added to previous first-hand experience with involvement in design for retail developments, as well as educational and religious institutions.

Anso Pollard

Professional Architect & Director

For Anso, a career in architecture provided her with an outlet for her artistic creativity, as well as the opportunity to be creative and develop various skills on a professional level.
After graduating from the University of Pretoria in 2004, she spent two years in London working on exciting projects like the Al Bandar and Khor al Raha island developments in Abu Dhabi.
Returning to South Africa in 2007, Anso worked for TJ Architects for 10 years where she has been fortunate to design and manage a large variety of projects. Her experiences in all project stages range from the government to the private sector, and include schools, laboratories, as well as lodges, and townhouse developments.
The nature of her work continues to make Anso confident in her problem-solving abilities and social skills which led her to the next step. 2017 saw the establishment of Khanya Architects with Anso and Karsten teaming up as co-directors. Here she has found a niche for residential projects and added to her skill of practical and beautiful interior spaces. Alongside these she has simultaneously kept her finger on the pulse of modern commercial design like guest houses, online private schools, and numerous high end residential projects.  She has recently collaborated with designer & brother David Krynauw to design a Loerie 2019 award winning building at Kleine Rijke, Hartbeespoort.
